I put together this list when I had several people questioning my family’s decision to homeschool. I hope that it might give others courage that are facing the same struggle. In no particular order:

School does not allow children to self-learn. It keeps them occupied until the ability to self-learn has mostly past.

Grouping by age makes them afraid of older people, have contempt for those younger

It takes away religion and replaces it with material things

School takes away all significance of families and turns the home into a place to eat and sleep and have casual relationships.

It takes up most of the child’s waking hours

Grades in school don’t reflect real life.

School does not tolerate argument.

It teaches kids to not defend themselves. As a result it also does not teach justice.

Teaches little useful knowledge.

Rewards dependency, calls it “teamwork”

School has an environment that discourages concentration, civil discourse and intellectual investigation.

Those certified by the State as fit to teach is nearly the least fit occupational body in the entire economy if college performance is the standard.

You are not allowed to choose your child’s teacher.

The child’s freedom and agency are taken away. They have to ask for the simplest tasks like using the bathroom.

It does not teach self-reliance.

It teaches that you only do something for a set amount of time and then you move on to something else - no matter where you are in the first thing.

Humiliation is used to keep children in line. This replace physical punishment. Psychological violence can be much more harmful.

Teaches children to prepare to fit into a pre-made slot in society.

Children used to be taught principles. Now schools teach “situation ethics.” Situational ethics means principles are shown to vary according to the demands of the moment. People with flexible principles reserve the right to betray their covenants.

We care more about the outcome of our children than anyone in teh school system.

Material is watered down too much

Schools do not treat everyone as equal.

Almost all are capable of achieving, but they teach the bell-curve.

They do not listen to kids.

School does not teach good social skills.

No teacher would understand the personality of my child better, nor our beliefs, traditions, and dreams.

School personnel have been totally absolved of responsibility.

Most first time moms read “What to Expect When Your Expecting” and other contemporary books. After reading these books most are scared even more about something going wrong with their pregnancy or the development of their baby. They are shown so many statistics on different things that could go wrong that it makes it sound almost impossible to have a normal and healthy pregnancy, delivery, and recovery.

Let me introduce you to a different kind of pregnancy book. It is The Thinking Woman’s Guide to a Better Birth by Henci Goer. This book points out many of the pitfalls that expecting mothers might encounter during pregnancy, but instead of making it sound like their bodies are full of faults, it shows many of the pitfalls of OB doctors and the care that they hand out. It covers many topics from the large number of C-sections to labor interventions to delivery practices. The great thing about this book is that it does show the good and bad to each thing. Most of the time when women are given information from their doctor, his staff, or traditional books the bad is glossed over as not being severe enough to be of any concern. This book shows that some things do have their application, but the harm done by them most of the time is much greater than most women are lead to believe. This book arms you with information to be able to stand up for yourself. It is well worth reading.

New Options of Birth Control

WebMD through Fox News had an article about five of the most recent birth control options to come out. You may read the article here. Our society really does treat fertility as a disease. Women submit to taking birth control because most think it is the only way to prevent pregnancy. Many doctors even tell you that if you are not taking the pill then you are trying to get pregnant. How short sighted on their part.

Fertility Awareness arms the woman(and if in a good relationship, the man) with the knowledge of what is happening with her body, and when there is the possibility of pregnancy. A woman is only fertile herself for about 24 hours after ovulation(48 if a second egg is released). The man is always fertile. Her body creates cervical fluid before ovulation to help the man’s sperm survive, but it is his fertility that runs the risk of pregnancy at that time. This being the case it seems unfair to make a woman deal with the side effects of birth control for 24 hours of being fertile. Fertility Awareness teaches you how to look for signs of fertility. Then you can either avoid unprotected sex during these times to prevent pregnancy, or aim for sex during these times to become pregnant. Because you are looking for signs of fertility it does not matter how regular your cycle is. It is different from the rhythm method.

Fertility is not a disease. Why constantly be drugging the body for it?

This is the best book that I have found. It is very complete, and after reading it you will wonder why they never bothered to include it in health class.

I wonder how many women who were never fertile in the first place have taken or will take the morning after pill.

My in-laws took me to an eye doctor that does vision therapy and works to improve eyesight. I was skeptical about it, and after a bit went back to “normal” doctors. I was only seeing him once a year which was really not enough if I wanted much improvement, and I did not believe that improvement was possible. By chance I came across a book at the library several years later that had exercises and explained how improvement was possible. That find started my search into eyesight.

I was taught in school that being near sighted was caused by the eye being too long from lens to retina, and being far sighted was caused by this distance being too short. As this was my understanding I did not see how exercises could do anything.

My understanding now is that there are several muscles that control the eyes. The ones that move them around need to work together so that both eyes work in unison. Others control the shape of the lens. These control whether you are near or far sighted. They make the lens curved more for looking up close and flatter for distance. If these muscles are tense for extended periods of time then they have troubles relaxing. Did you notice that in school the kids that read all the time started getting glasses around second grade? This is because they were looking up close so much that their eyes had troubles relaxing. Some exercises are geared towards relaxing these muscles. Of course for most they have been tense for some time, so it takes some time to work them out. If these muscles are weak then we are able to see far away, but have troubles up close because they have troubles curving the lens. Other exercises are geared toward strengthening these muscles.

This is one program that I found. I have not devoted as much time to it as I would like. You have to become dedicated to do this just like dedicating to a normal exercises program. Still, several of these can be done at odd moments or when eye fatigue is felt. There are other programs out there, but this one is simple. It is based of the Bates Method.

 The Natural Vision Improvement Kit

Meir Schnieder has a web site, too. The School of Self-Healing He is based in San Fransisco, CA. He does more that just vision thearpy, but I have not done any research into any of his other things.

I started to look at this with my second pregnancy. This is something that any woman should look at before she has the glucose tolerance test in her second trimester.

The glucose tolerance test was not even started with the idea that high sugar levels at the end of pregnancy was harmful. It started with research to see if women who had elevated levels in pregnancy had an increased risk of developing Type II diabetes later in life. This was found to be true, but from that somehow gestational diabetes was born.

Diabetes can be harmful during pregnancy. The most critical time for the baby is during the first trimester, though. This is when most eyesight problems or birth defects occur. The glucose tolerance test is administered in the second trimester missing this critical period. If diabetes is a major concern it would be better to get tested for it before getting pregnant.

This is a link to an article that I think explains both the pros and cons to the glucose tolerance test. I highly encourage reading it.

Henci Goer on Gestational Diabetes

Henci Goer has also written a couple of books that have good information. I would recommend this one for anyone. This one is also good.
